Chinese Professors Visit the HSE

On October 1, 2012, a meeting on academic cooperation between the HSE and leading Chinese universities took place at the HSE.

The HSE has long had strong ties with several Chinese universities. In October, members of the administration and professors from the Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan), and Shandong University visited Moscow.

They met with Vladimir Avtonomov, Academic Supervisor of the Faculty of Economics, and Oleg Zamulin, Dean of this Faculty, Andrey Yakovlev, Director of the HSE Institute for Industrial and Market Studies, as well as representatives from some HSE laboratories who had previously had contact with Chinese higher education, particularly during a visit to Wuhan University. This university is one of the top ten Chinese universities, and was among the top 400 best universities of the world in the 2011 Times Higher Education Ranking.

Participants of the meeting discussed how best to exchange experience between the universities. In particular, the HSE representatives raised a question regarding the difficulties of publication in Western peer-reviewed journals, which can affect the university’s positions in international rankings. Vladimir Avtonomov said: ‘One of the ways to overcome this problem is to carry out comparative studies with the use of not only Western experience, but the experience of such countries as China. Our countries have a great deal in common and yet at the same time are very different, and comparative studies can be very fruitful and interesting for the international audience’.

Yao Jungan, Deputy Dean of the Economics and Management School, Wuhan University, emphasized that the cooperation between Wuhan University and the HSE can be implemented not only through joint research and publications, but also through studying best educational practices from both universities, student exchanges, and other forms of interaction.

The meeting demonstrated that the universities are open to cooperation and outlined some prospects for joint work.
