The Results of the Qualifying Round of the CIMA Emerging Leaders Competition 2021 in Russia, Organised Jointly with HSE Graduate School of Business and Faculty of Economic Sciences

On April 17-18 the qualifying round of the international case championship CIMA Emerging Leaders Competition 2021 was organized at HSE and five partner universities. A total of 38 applications for participation in the case championship were received, 11 of which were submitted by student teams from HSE (applications were submitted by students of the Graduate School of Business, the Faculty of Economic Sciences, the Faculty of Communications, Media and Design and the International College of Economics and Finance).

The championship is supported by the British association CIMA (The Chartered Institute Of Management Accountants). The HSE Graduate School of Business and the School of Finance of the Faculty of Economic Sciences are among the general partners of the Championship.

The partner universities, which also held the qualifying round, were: Bashkir State University, Southern Federal University, Tomsk State University, Novosibirsk State Technical University and Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management.

Participants of the qualifying round had to analyse the film industry market and propose an effective economic solution for film production. In the qualifying round, the tasks of the case championship consisted of two blocks: financial accounting and management consulting. The requirement of a high level of knowledge and understanding of the financial fundamentals of business distinguishes the format of the championships held annually by CIMA.

The case for the championship was from a real CIMA management-level exam, which was conducted for CIMA students all over the world; no allowance was made for the young age of the participants. We wish the finalists of the regional round success and look forward to their creative solutions!

HSE teams defended their solutions in the offline format in front of an expert jury consisting of Anna Morozova, Director of HSE Centre for Project-Based Learning, Alexander Voyko, Head of the ‘Financial Management’ specialisation in the ‘Business Administration’ Bachelor programme, Elena Makeeva, Deputy Head of the FES School of Finance, and Tatyana Malofeeva, Senior Lecturer at the FES School of Finance.

The 1st and 2nd place teams from each university qualified for the next round, which will determine the list of finalists for the CIMA Emerging Leaders Competition 2021. The winners of the qualifying stage at HSE were: 1st place - iRiski team (FES), 2nd place - MiM team (GSB).

Anna Morozova, Director of HSE Centre for Project-Based Learning:

We see the importance of developing intellectual competitions among young people, including the format of case championships. Last year Higher School of Economics launched the All-Russian Case Championship for School Students in Economics and Entrepreneurship. The next step for us is the All-Russian Case Championship for University Students. That's why the partnership with CIMA and holding this championship in Russia with a well-known partner was a landmark event for us. I hope that next year we will already be planning to represent our teams at an international level.

This case championship differs significantly in that the case in question focuses on in-depth understanding of financial and management decisions. This means that the winning teams demonstrated a high level of hard skills in this field. Now comes the finals, where students will have a more serious task. Good luck to all the finalists!

We remind you that the main prize of the case championship is a fast track to the internship in Unilever company as well as unique offers from general partners and partner universities to include individual achievements of the winners and finalists of the case championship in their portfolio and to provide discounts for studying in their Master programmes. The winners of the case championship will receive a unique gift from CIMA: an opportunity to take the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting exam for free and get their first international certificate in finance!
