Two New Research Laboratories are to be Launched at GSB

The winners of the research laboratories project competition within the faculties of Higher School of Economics have been announced. The winners from HSE Graduate School of Business are:

  • Creativity Management Lab, the head of the laboratory – Sergey Filonovich,
  • Laboratory of Strategies and Operations in International Business, the head of the laboratory – Anna Veselova.

The competition is held annually starting from 2018. The goal of the competition is to develop research activity on different faculties, motivate students to do research work and relevant for the academic agenda research projects. This year, there were 22 participants in the competition, and the committee supported 9 of them.

Thus, HSE Graduate School of Business will start the new year with three research laboratories: the Laboratory of Network Organizational Forms, which was founded in 2010, Creativity Management Lab, and the Laboratory of Strategies and Operations in International Business. The new laboratories are now in the process of opening their own webpages, so we decided to briefly tell our readers what the laboratories are planning to do and show their video-presentations from the competition.

Laboratory of Strategies and Operations in International Business

The Laboratory of Strategies and Operations in International Business will study transformations of business models, strategies and structures of international companies in the conditions of ‘new’ global economy. One of the main goals of the laboratory is to create a new platform for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students, GSB staff, Russian and international researchers, experts, and representatives of the business community so that they would interact and, thus, create and spread new knowledge in the field of international business.

There are four GSB professors in the team of the lab: Anna Veselova – the head of the research lab, associate professor of the Department of Strategic and International Management, Svetlana Smeltsova – associate professor of the Department of Strategic and International Management, Margarita Gladkova – associate professor of the Department of Business Infortmatics, Svetlana Shchelkova – associate professor of the Department of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management. There are also three master’s students of the International Management programme in the team: Mariya Elagina (1st year), Alina Osipova (1st year), Elizaveta Shklovets (1st year), and five bachelor’s students of the Business Administration programme: Aleksandra Sidorenko (4th year), Polina Mishel Claro Ramires (4th year), Ekaterina Tkachuk (4th year), Agapi Papadopulu (4th year), Luiza Rakhimova (2nd year).

In the next three years, the research lab is planning to release a series of publications in Q1/Q2 academic journals, publish chapters in monographs, and also participate in international research conferences. Students will acquire practical skills of data collection, data processing with the use of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, preparing materials for participation in conferences and research competitions, including HSE Student Research Paper Competition. The research lab is also planning to prepare a series of cases to use in teaching of bachelor’s, master’s and executive education courses.

The lab will gather doctoral students of HSE Doctoral School of Management for implementation of different objectives and for doing independent scientific research on the topics related to the lab, the findings of which can be used on candidates’ thesis defence.

Creativity Management Lab

Creativity Management Lab is planning to transfer management technologies from non-profit sectors to business organizations. The team of the laboratory is, in a way, unique because there are specialists with complementary competencies.

The head of the lab – professor of the Department of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management of GSB, Sergey Filonovich – has extensive experience of research work in different fields: from experimental physics and history of science to organizational behaviour and human resource management and education management. Associate professor of the same department Olga Zelenova does HR practices research, including the ones that are about staff development and talent management in Russian and international organizations. Valeria Ustinova – GSB professor of practice, theatre teacher, actress with extensive experience of work with the leading Russian directors and practice in the field of actors coaching (for more than 20 years she has worked as a rehearsal director at Et Cetera theatre). Sergey Yagolkovskiy, associate professor of the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences, for more than 20 years has been doing research of creativity and methods of its stimulation. There are also nine students of the bachelor’s programme Business Administration in the team of the lab: Alisher Atakhanov (2nd year), Dilbar Baymuratova (2nd year), Andrey Baranov (2nd year), Nathan Kernasovsky (2nd year), Viktoriya Kuzina (2nd year), Oleg Mitryushkin (3rd year), Aleksandra Rudakova (2nd year), Dmitry Tuyakov (3rd year), Antanas Eydintas (2nd year).

In the next three years, the team of the lab is planning to prepare a series of publications, participate in international research conferences, and release a series of cases devoted to the practices of creativity management in creative organizations for bachelor’s, management, and executive education programmes. The laboratory is also planning to hold a regular seminar on a topic related to the lab, record an online course on creativity management (an elective course for master’s students), and regularly hold seminars on this topic. On the third year of the project’s existence, the team plans to hold an international seminar.

Participation in this project will let GSB student acquire theoretical and practical skills of writing a bibliography, preparing analytical texts, gathering data from open sources, conducting interviews, and analyzing retrieved data. They will participate in writing scientific and scientific-practical articles and acquire skills of diagnosis of management processes in a new (non-profit) field. Those skills are necessary for a successful career of a manager or a consultant.
