Spring School at HSE GSB brought together students from Moscow and Veliky Novgorod
On May 19–20, 2025, the Graduate School of Business at HSE University hosted a Spring School for students enrolled in the dual-degree Business Management program, jointly run with Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University (NovSU).
The event welcomed 21 students from Veliky Novgorod. The program, specially designed by faculty members and partners of HSE GSB, included both academic sessions and extracurricular activities. Students toured the historic Shabolovka campus, attended lectures on contemporary business management topics—from operational efficiency and financial management to entrepreneurial thinking—took part in a panel discussion with GSB experts on career paths for managers, and worked through real-life business cases.
A key focus of the Spring School was career development. Students attended a workshop by AXENIX, participated in an open dialogue with Alfa-Bank’s HR Director Marat Ismagulov, and joined a business-themed speed-dating session with Business Management students from the Moscow campus.
According to Dmitry Knatko, Academic Supervisor of the Business Management program, such events not only enhance students' academic experience but also create a dynamic learning environment where theory, practice, and inter-campus collaboration go hand in hand: “The program was dense and engaging. The students had the chance to interact with industry professionals, faculty, and peers. Events like these strengthen inter-campus connections and make business education more vibrant and integrated.”
The Spring School fits seamlessly into the broader logic of the joint program between HSE GSB and NovSU. Its goal is to prepare future managers ready to work in industrial, infrastructure, financial, and service sectors. Key courses are taught by HSE GSB faculty, who also provide academic support, advise on projects, and supervise final theses.
A core principle of the program is consistent teaching quality, modern educational formats, and strong industry ties—regardless of the region. Regular student and faculty exchanges, such as the Spring School, help foster a unified learning environment and strengthen connections between campuses.
Natalya Kanishcheva
Program Manager for Business Management, NovSU
The Spring School organized by HSE GSB left an overwhelmingly positive impression on all participants. The program was rich and informative, giving students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of modern business education and gain new knowledge and skills that will benefit them in their future careers.
The panel discussion with HSE GSB faculty members—Dmitry Knatko, Anastasia Veselova, and Ulyana Podverbnykh—as well as with students, was a key highlight. It helped participants understand real labor market demands and career growth prospects for managers. The business case work and the simulation game encouraged team skills and problem-solving abilities—both essential for a successful career in business. The Spring School was an excellent starting point for ongoing cooperation between students from the two universities located in different cities.
Alexander Sabrekov
Business Management student, NovSU
The Spring School gave us a wide range of activities. On one hand, we explored what studying at the Moscow campus is like; on the other hand, we connected with students enrolled in the same program. It was meaningful to realize that you're not alone—your peers are learning the same skills at the same time, just in a different city.
We also learned how to write a strong resume, which is an essential skill today. The program’s diversity gave me a huge boost of motivation to keep learning, explore new topics, and broaden my horizons. After the events, there’s a lot to reflect on—we were given plenty of food for thought.
Anna Razina
Business Management student, NovSU
The Spring School was truly motivating and multifaceted. First, Moscow left a very positive impression—I didn’t expect that. Second, seeing how HSE students live and study helped me understand my own place, even while still being back at NovSU. Third, the intense program pushed me to reflect on my own life path and goals—things we often overlook in daily routine.
It was also a pleasant surprise to receive HSE GSB merchandise and access passes to all the buildings. I was especially impressed by the Pokrovka campus—so many bright emotions and an incredible scale!
The development of networked academic programs is part of HSE’s broader strategy to strengthen its academic presence across Russia. The dual-degree program enables students to receive world-class education without leaving their home region, while faculty bring advanced methodologies and standards to local educational contexts. The Spring School was more than just an academic event—it was a model of how collaboration between universities can create a unified educational ecosystem with real opportunities for both students and teachers.
