Open Innovation in Russia: Case of MTS

Open innovation is a paradigm, organizations increasingly use to manage and profit from innovation. In essence, it is based on the execution of a wide range of practices related to external knowledge acquisition and commercialization, which range from simple crowd engagement to choosing a new ice cream taste to the involvement of lead users in developing new medical devices, R&D collaborations, acquisitions of startups, licensing agreements, and free revealing of inventions. Through open innovation approach companies expand their boundaries, which affects how they strategize, compete, create, deliver and capture value.
MTS, Russia’s largest mobile operator and a leading provider of media and digital services, is one of champions of open innovation in Russia. The company is successfully using open innovation, building on numerous partnerships spanning from universities to startups, to grow its ecosystem. To understand why MTS is using open innovation, how and when we invited Mr. Dmitry Kurin, Director of Open Innovations and Investments at MTS to be our guest speaker.
In conversation with Mr. Kurin, we will focus on questions like:
