The HSE Graduate School of Business library has curated and presented a unique collection of business books.

From Shanghai to Singapore: a unique book collection at the HSE GSB library

The exhibition, titled “Business in Asia,” features more than forty new releases from leading global publishers. The display introduces Asia from multiple perspectives: management models, modern business cases, and research on political and cultural processes. Among the books presented are Asian Business Model by Joe Studwell, China in the Era of Xi Jinping by Ivan Zuenko, China for Business by Konstantin Batanov, and Indian Attraction by Evgenia Griva and Pavel Seleznev. The collection includes both Russian and foreign-language publications.

The collection quickly became popular not only with bachelor’s and master’s students but also with MBA participants. MBA students’ interest is driven not only by Russia’s economic pivot toward Asia but also by the program’s international modules at leading Asian business schools.

For Russia, business with Asia means diversifying the economy, accessing growing markets, fostering technological development, and strengthening geopolitical positions. This direction will remain a priority in the long term, considering current global changes. Asia is a leader in fintech, e-commerce, and AI. Learning from its experience is crucial for the competitiveness of Russian companies. As Russia’s leading business school, HSE GSB responds to challenges and trends in a timely manner, building partnerships with Asian universities and adapting curricula to prepare professionals for the new economic reality.

The collection is truly unique in its breadth of topics and depth of insight into the business and culture of this vast region. For example, two fundamental works help form a comprehensive view of Asia before diving into individual countries. Joe Studwell’s Asian Business Model is invaluable for understanding the macroeconomic and political underpinnings of the region’s success. By dispelling the myths of the “Asian miracle,” the author explains the real mechanisms of growth and their inherent risks. Sing Ong Yu’s Asian Style of Management complements this picture on the micro level, detailing corporate governance and leadership principles in China, Japan, and Korea, highlighting both similarities and key differences.

Books by Tian Tao and Huang Weiwei on Huawei shed light on the company’s management principles and corporate culture, offering insights into how world-class Chinese business operates. Former Google China President Kai-Fu Lee’s AI Superpowers explains how China became a global competitor to the U.S. in artificial intelligence. English-language books such as Japanese Capitalism and Entrepreneurship and History of Innovative Entrepreneurs in Japan provide historical and economic context for Japan’s business development.

The HSE GSB Library is not just a place for storing books, but a living space for work, ideas, and inspiration. That’s why, when forming our collection, we select literature that truly reflects the interests of our students and faculty and supports their professional growth. The new collection on Asia-Pacific countries offers an opportunity to view the region from multiple angles: exploring cultural characteristics, understanding management practices, and grasping global economic trends that largely shape the future of international business.

The organizers emphasize that the “Business in Asia” collection will be continuously updated. In the near future, new books from international publishers will arrive and become available to all HSE GSB students and participants, from bachelor’s programs to MBA and executive education.
