HSE GSB basketball team wins gold at HSE University Spartakiad

On January 26, the HSE University Spartakiad basketball tournament took place — a landmark annual event that brings together the university’s best student teams. This year, 12 teams representing different faculties competed for the title.

The team from the HSE Graduate School of Business once again demonstrated exceptional skill and confidently advanced through every stage of the tournament. In the group stage, the GSB team faced off against the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) and the Faculty of Humanities (FH). Victories in both matches secured their place in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, the GSB team met one of the tournament’s toughest opponents — the Faculty of Computer Science (FCS). The first half was tight, with only a minimal difference in the score. However, in the second half, the GSB team pulled ahead and confidently secured a spot in the final.

The final match was played against a team composed of players from the Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) and the Faculty of Physics — a familiar rival from previous Spartakiad finals. Although the match was intense, our athletes created a solid lead by the end and once again claimed the championship title.

Special attention should be given to the updated roster of the GSB team: many of last year’s champions have graduated, but their places were taken by talented first-year students who quickly adapted to the team and made a significant contribution to the victory.

Following the tournament, Igor Grigoryev, a second-year Business Informatics student, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the competition.

We warmly congratulate our team on another victory and wish them continued success on the court!

“I’ve been playing basketball since I was 6 — my parents signed me up, and I’m very grateful for that. The tournament left a great impression, everything went perfectly. We trained weekly from the very beginning of the season, which helped us build on the success of previous years and win again. Everything went just as we had planned. Huge thanks to the organizers — the event was top-notch, as always. There were many people — players and fans alike — and the media coverage was also excellent. Thanks to everyone involved!”

“I started playing basketball in 3rd grade. Like many, I went because my parents signed me up — and then I really got into it. The games left only positive memories. This year, we had a pretty strong team, but the opponents also pleasantly surprised us with their skill. It definitely wasn’t an easy tournament.

The tournament format has stayed the same over the years, which has its pros and cons. Of course, I’d love for the games to be a bit longer, but that would mean stretching the tournament over more than one or even two days. So I think the current format is the most balanced. I’d also like to thank the organizing team — the tournament was run at a very high level!”
