“We analyze real business cases in class — it’s like getting hands-on experience in the profession”: an interview with student Polina Bolotova
On University Admissions
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Polina Bolotova. I’m 19 and from Tula. I spent most of my life playing professional tennis, but that didn’t stop me from being an active student and getting excellent grades. That probably influenced my decision to choose HSE University.
What was important to you when choosing a university?
The most important things for me were the faculty's expertise and the structure of the academic programme. Extracurricular activities also played a big role — I found an incredible number of electives, clubs, and student groups on HSE’s website.
Why do you think the Graduate School of Business at HSE University was the right choice?
At HSE, I found people who have become very close to me. I feel extremely comfortable here and know that with this kind of team, I can balance study and fun without sacrificing either one.
What programmes were you considering when applying?
I initially considered another HSE programme, but after digging deeper, I realized that Business Administration is broader and covers many areas of life, offering more options for the future.

On Studying at the Graduate School of Business
Which subjects or courses do you enjoy the most and why?
Right now, I enjoy marketing the most. In lectures and seminars, we analyze real business cases. It’s like being immersed in the inner workings of a company — you get to “feel” the profession with your own hands.
What useful skills have you gained during your studies?
One of the most important things at HSE is project work, which is usually done in teams. Even in my first year, I’ve already seen how crucial it is to present ideas clearly and listen to others in order to achieve great results.
How would you rate the intensity of your programme?
I think the Business Administration programme allows you to apply your new skills from day one. Some of my classmates are already doing internships — just like me.
On Opportunities at HSE GSB
Which GSB and HSE opportunities have you already taken advantage of?
I've attended a variety of guest lectures held on campus. These events helped me learn more about internships, selection criteria, and I even got to speak with recruiters directly. I’ve also improved my CV. This summer, I plan to attend a summer school abroad with help from the International Office.

On Extracurricular Activities
Which activities or clubs have stood out to you the most?
I actively participate in campus life. I’m a member of the Made by student organization, and we’re currently organizing one of the largest student balls in Russia. I’m also a volunteer, ambassador, and on the university tennis team. And I’ve just been selected as a student mentor for the class of 2025 — I can’t wait to share my experience with incoming first-years!
What do you do outside of your studies?
I work as an English language tutor and at a digital agency. I manage to juggle everything, and what I learn in class — especially marketing — is incredibly helpful in my job at the agency.

On the Future and Advice for Applicants
How do you see your future professional development?
I hope to land an internship during my studies. I’ve heard that many students end up getting job offers after their internships. Plus, I’m confident that the GSB Career Centre will help me find a job after graduation.
What advice would you give to prospective students applying to your programme?
I’d recommend talking to current students and attending open days. And one more important tip: don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and don’t be afraid to learn.
