Round table "Creativity management practices: what a museum can teach business"

The round table is organized by the Laboratory for Creativity Management of HSE Graduate School of Business together with the Russian Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Russia).  

The online event will be held on December 21, 2021 from 5 to 8 PM CEST.

In modern business, creativity is the basis of competitiveness. Therefore, designing and mastering any methods of developing creativity seems to be an extremely important task. Currently, the topic of creativity development is practically monopolized by the advertising business, so the methods of its development are reduced to learning copywriting skills and advertising techniques. At the same time, creative organizations have extensive experience in developing creativity in various fields of activity and maintaining motivation for its implementation. However, this experience is barely demanded in the activities of business organizations.

Laboratory’s activities can serve as a trigger for activating the demand in the business environment for methods of working with creativity that are actively used in the non-profit sector and creative organizations. It will help ensure or greatly facilitate the transfer of management technology from the non-profit sector to business organisations.

The round table is aimed to discuss the model of the Laboratory's research in relation to museum cultural leaders with ideologists of the development of museum activities.

Host of the event:

  • Sergey Filonovich, Head of Department, Professor of the HSE Graduate School of Business; Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences; Head of the Mini-MBA Program of the Sberbank Corporate University; Russian scientist and expert in the field of leadership and people management in business.

Key speakers:

  • Björn Stenvers, CEO of the Eye Care Foundation, a Board Member of ICOM MPR. He does many museum activities via the Manus Brinkman Fund. Björn had been director of the Amsterdam Museums Foundation from 2013 up to 2017. He also set up several Museum Academies for museum staff training in Amsterdam, Rostov, Aruba, Altai, Ekaterinburg and the Russian Zoo Academy. He has several degrees in Art History, Marketing and Communications;
  • Tomislav Šola, Croatian scientist, internationally recognized specialist in museology; Professor at the Department of Museology and Heritage Management at the University of Zagreb, formerly Head of the Department of Information Sciences of the University;
  • Natalya Samoilenko, Deputy Director General of the Russian State Library for External Relations and Exhibition Activities, Ph.D. in Art History, Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation (2012-2013), Director of the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve (2013-2016), laureate of the award “In Memory of T.A. Kibalchich for successful management in the museum business. 2016;
  • Stefan Simon, Professor, First Director of the Institute for Cultural Preservation (IPCH) at Yale University, Director of the Rathgen Research Laboratory.

Also, the discussion will be attended by researchers from the GSB Laboratory for Creativity Management and ICOM Russia: O. Zelenova, V. Oderedenov, I. Smirnova, V. Ustinova, S. Yagolkovsky.

Based on the results of the round table, a resolution will be developed.

Simultaneous translation of the round table into Russian and English is provided.

ICOM Russia is a Russian National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), an international organization of museums and museum professionals committed to the conservation, continuation, and promotion of the world's natural and cultural heritage.

The Russian National Committee has been an ICOM member since 1957. There are about 1500 i members in ICOM Russia today.  

Through its Executive Directorate, ICOM Russia has been conducting an active work with individual and collective members of the Committee, particularly:  

  • Regularly informs about international events organized by ICOM and other museum organizations; 
  • Organizes and coordinates international symposia, conferences, and seminars focused on museum work, as well as national and regional trainings on museum management;  
  • Designates the Committee’s representative delegation to participate in ICOM General Conferences, museum events and festivals;
  • Provides consultative and methodological assistance, etc.
