Photo blogger’s recommendations

On June 10th GSB students attended a workshop on photography with @alissia_way. You may read about the tips shared by the photo blogger below.

To take a photo, you need to go through 3 stages: preparing for your photoshoot, doing a photoshoot, airbrushing.

Getting ready for the photoshoot:

- Be in control of the lighting! Take photos mostly during daylight hours, as the lighting is better.

- It is not recommended to shoot in direct sunlight because the light is shining from above - that gives harsh shadows and bright highlights.

- The best time to take photos is around sunrise or sunset. Referred to as “the golden hour” these times provide the perfect light to capture stunning photos.

- Keep in mind that your light source must follow the face.

- Pay attention to your background. If the background is colourful, you should not be photographed there in colourful clothes. If the background is monochromatic, then, on the opposite, wear something bright!

Doing a photoshoot:

- Always clean your smartphone camera lens! If there is a smudge on the lens, there's no way to save the ‘bad’ photo!

- If you're photographing someone, hold the camera to the same height as the model's eye level!

- Don't crop arms, legs, etc.

- Review the captured footage at once so that you have an option of reshooting.

- Use the rule of thirds! Position your main subjects at the intersection of the lines!

Example

Poses:

- Try to move around in the picture, e.g. take a step.

- "Occupy" your hands with something: Grab a cup of coffee or a magazine...

- Face the photographer and look over his shoulder. This way, you'll look lively and sharp.

- Create 'angles' with your hands and feet.

Example

Airbrushing:

- If it's a bad shot, there's no point to airbrush. It only works with an already nicely taken shot to make a photo look better than it already is!

- If you lighten the shadows a little bit, your photos will look better!

- If you like apps with ready-made filters - don't use filters to the max.
