International Experience at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg

Anna answered the most frequently asked questions:

How long does it take to get a visa?
The visa process can take several weeks, so it’s important to book your embassy appointment in advance. In Anna’s case, the visa was delayed and she ended up flying to Germany the same night she picked it up from the embassy.

What is the format of the courses?
Courses were held online due to the pandemic. However, exams were conducted in person at the university. Classes were interactive, often involving group work in breakout rooms. Language courses were also available, and Anna took a German course for beginners.

Are there direct flights to Germany?
Due to the restrictions in 2020, direct flights were limited. Anna had to fly with a layover in Turkey. It’s important to check the current situation and entry requirements before planning your route.

Is a COVID test required at the airport?
Upon arrival in Germany, Anna had to quarantine for five days and take a COVID test. The rules may vary, so it’s best to stay updated with official guidelines.

How long is the quarantine?
The quarantine lasted five days, after which a negative test result allowed her to move freely.

What is the dormitory check-in process like?
Students receive instructions from the university and the dormitory administration. Anna mentioned that her buddy (a local student volunteer) helped her with practical matters, such as contacting the housing office and navigating bureaucracy.

Do professors speak with an accent?
Anna had no issues understanding her professors. Even though she was initially concerned, the lectures were clear and accessible, with only a few specific terms needing translation.

Are the subjects similar to HSE courses?
She took master’s-level courses, which were challenging but manageable thanks to her previous experience at HSE. The subjects were not exactly the same, but the analytical skills she had developed helped her succeed.

How do international students celebrate the holidays?
Around Christmas, the international student community organized events and gatherings to celebrate the holidays together. Despite restrictions, they found ways to socialize safely and make the most of the festive season.

Anna's story shows that even during a pandemic, studying abroad can be a transformative and rewarding experience — filled with new knowledge, friendships, and memories that last a lifetime.
