Russian professional triathlete and participant of the 2016 Summer Olympics hosted HSE Graduate School of Business
Members of the ‘HSE Triathlon Team‘ project have organized an interview with Maria Shorets, Russian professional triathlete and participant of the 2016 Summer Olympics. ‘HSE Triathlon Team‘ project leader Egor Teplukhin and Maria Shorets discussed her impressive sports career and the ways to popularize triathlon among HSE students. Maria talked about the classic mistakes of the beginners in triathlon and gave advice to HSE students on how to avoid them.
‘HSE Triathlon Team‘ project won the Student Groups Project Contest and received financial support from HSE Graduate School of Business. As a result of the project HSE Triathlon Team has appeared on the basis of GSB. Its team leader and captain is Egor Teplukhin, a 2nd-year student of the ‘Marketing and Market Analytics’ programme. Egor is one of the popularizers of triathlon in Russia and a co-organizer of triathlon and open water swimming starts, who has been involved in triathlon since 2011.
The main task of the HSE Triathlon Team is to bring like-minded people together among students, graduates and staff. It is well known that lots of ambitious and purposeful athletes are engaged in triathlon, and such universities as Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford and MIT already have their own triathlon teams. In addition to the planned creation of a full-fledged sports section, HSE Triathlon Team will conduct research activities in the field of sports, in particular, triathlon.
Egor and project team members invited Russian professional triathlete within the framework of the ‘HSE Triathlon Team‘ project. In an interview, Maria Shorets talked about her reasons to choose professional sports as a student and how her sports career went. Maria started practicing swimming at the age of seven and made plans for the future in swimming. But at the age of 14 she decided to try her hand at triathlon. This was a turning point in Maria's sports career and after a while Maria Shorets was enrolled in the Olympic Reserve School in St. Petersburg. Three years later she participated at her first international start - The Europe Triathlon Championships among women. Maria took the 5th place in the competition, and it allowed her to become a member of the Russian National Triathlon Team. From that moment Maria's career advancement in professional sports has begun. Also Maria shared emotional experiences in her sports career and participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
During the conversation Maria and Egor discussed various issues such as additional opportunities for athletes participating in international competitions including the financial aspect and athletes’ prospects after professional sports careers.
